Moving, selling a property or ending a rental? Iowa Regional Utilities Association (IRUA) makes it simple to stop service or close your account. The most important step is letting us know before the change happens, so we can record an accurate final meter reading and send a correct final bill. Here’s what you need to know.
Please contact IRUA before any property sale or rental change. Reaching out ahead of time helps us:
There’s no need to wait until moving day. As soon as you know your closing or move-out date, reach out and we’ll take it from there.
Whichever way you choose, include your account number if you have it, the property address and your closing or move-out date. That helps us find your account quickly.
If you’re selling a home or land served by IRUA, contact us by phone or email to let us know about the sale. This lets us transfer billing to the new owner. The buyer completes their own application to start service, which they can find on our Start Service page.
Renters should contact IRUA before moving out so we can record a final reading for your time at the property. Because the property owner is the member on the account, it’s also a good idea to share your move-out date with your landlord.
When a tenant moves out, let us know about the rental change before it happens. A few things to keep in mind:
Moving brings a long to-do list. Here’s a quick checklist to make the water part easy:
If your next home is also served by IRUA, we’d love to keep serving you. Stop service at your current address, then start service at your new one. IRUA serves all or portions of 18 Iowa counties, so check our Service Areas page to see whether your new address is included. If you’re not sure, our team can help you find out.
Once we record your final reading, IRUA prepares your final bill. You can pay it in any of these ways:
Card payments online or by phone, e-checks and portal Quick Pay payments include a convenience fee of $1.75 or 2.5% of the total payment amount.
If you’re enrolled in autopay or receive paperless statements, mention it when you contact us. Our team will confirm how your final payment will be handled and where your final bill should go.
If you’re keeping a property but leaving it empty for a season, you may not need to close your account. IRUA offers a seasonal shutoff instead:
Please contact us as soon as you know your move-out or closing date, and before the change happens. Our team will confirm the timing of your final reading when you reach out.
Yes. Moves can be reported by email at info@irua.net. Include your account number and the property address so we can find your account quickly. Email shouldn’t be used for emergencies, so please call for anything urgent.
Our team will let you know about any final charges when you contact us. Your final bill is based on your final meter reading, and we’re happy to explain anything on it.
Not on its own. The buyer completes an application to start service and also lets us know about the purchase by phone or email so billing transfers correctly. Our Start Service page walks through each step.
A seasonal shutoff turns the water off at the meter pit while your account stays open, and monthly minimum charges continue. Stopping service closes your account with a final reading and a final bill. Not sure which is right for you? Give us a call and we’ll help you decide.
