When something affects your water service, you deserve to hear about it quickly and clearly. Iowa Regional Utilities Association (IRUA) uses automated calls, emails, text alerts, mailings, and website updates to keep members informed and prepared. Here’s how IRUA communicates, what to expect during a service interruption, and how to make sure our messages reach you.
How IRUA Keeps You Informed
You don’t need to sign up to receive outage alerts. Every customer is enrolled automatically, using the contact details on your Membership Agreement. Here’s how we reach you:
- Automated phone calls: Every customer receives alerts by phone.
- Email: If an email address is on file, you’ll receive alerts by email too.
- Text notifications: Opt in through the customer portal to get alerts by text.
- Mailings: IRUA sends letters when needed.
- This page: News, alerts, and announcements are posted below.
IRUA’s automated alerts are delivered through the SwiftReach Swift911 notification system, so messages can reach many members at once when it matters.
Save These Numbers
Automated calls from IRUA may come from any of these numbers:
- A 1-800 number
- 641-321-3646
- 641-792-7011
We recommend saving 641-321-3646 in your phone contacts so you recognize our calls and don’t miss an important message. It’s also IRUA’s pay-by-phone line, so it’s a handy number to keep.
Sign Up for Text Alerts
Text notifications are opt-in. Setting them up is easy:
- Visit the IRUA customer portal.
- Register with your 5-digit account number and the phone number on your account. If your bill shows a 4-digit account number, add a 0 to the front.
- Opt in to text notifications.
While you’re in the portal, you can also sign up for paperless statements, which arrive five days sooner than paper bills, and enroll in autopay. Find more account tools on our Manage My Service page.
Keep Your Contact Information Current
Alerts can only reach you if we have the right phone number and email address. Please let us know if you:
- Change your phone number
- Add or change an email address
- Move, sell, or rent out a property
Call 641-792-7011 or email info@irua.net with your account number, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Be Prepared Before You Need It
A few minutes of preparation now can make any service interruption easier to handle:
- Know your account number. It’s printed on your statement. Keep it handy so you can share it quickly when you call.
- Save our numbers. Add 641-321-3646 and 641-792-7011 to your contacts.
- Opt in to texts. Text notifications through the portal give you one more way to hear from us.
- Add an email address. If you’d like alerts by email, make sure IRUA has your current address on file.
- Go paperless. E-statements arrive five days sooner. Sign up in the portal, or email info@irua.net with your account number from the address that should receive them.
What to Expect During a Service Interruption
Here’s what typically happens when a repair or other work affects your water service:
- You’ll be notified. IRUA sends automated calls, plus emails where an address is on file, to customers in the affected area.
- Repairs get underway. A typical repair takes about three to four hours.
- Lines are flushed. After a repair, flushing may leave your water briefly cloudy. This is normal.
- Area maps may be shared. For larger events, IRUA may post a map of the affected area along with the alert.
- Precautionary advisories. If a precautionary advisory is issued for your area, follow the instructions in the alert and watch your messages and this page for updates.
We’re working to restore service as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience while our team gets the job done.
Other Notices You May Receive
IRUA’s automated system also helps you stay on top of your account. You may receive:
- Leak alerts: When your meter shows continuous flow, IRUA sends an automated notice so you can check for a leak. Anything past the meter pit is the owner’s to repair, and IRUA can’t repair private lines or check for leaks, so a quick look around your property is a good first step.
- High usage notices: A heads-up when your water use is higher than expected.
- Account reminders: Including past-due notices, so you have time to bring your account current.
- Billing updates: Such as changes to due dates. Since September 2026, bills are due on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Friday of the month, depending on your property’s billing cycle. Your statement shows your due date and cycle number.
Where to Find Updates
When you want the latest on your service, here’s where to look:

- This page: Service alerts, billing notices, and announcements are posted here.
- Your statement: Each bill shows your due date and billing cycle number.
- Our office: Call 641-792-7011 during business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. After hours, IRUA’s answering service takes your call.
